⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Yoite
Age: 16
Canon: Nabari no Ou
Canon Point: Chapter 23, while having a bout of sadness and anxiety at being treated with kindness.

Background:
When Yoite's mother was pregnant she wanted a girl and was going to name the girl Sora. However, her Sora was born as neither male nor female (though he is referred to as male) and she passed away after giving birth, leaving Yoite in his father's care. As a child he was abused by his family, neglected and abused, blamed for murdering his mother. He was made to believe he was a Death God who killed his own mother to survive, kept locked in the basement most of the time, only allowed out once in a while to go to church. His family hated him, telling him he was not supposed to exist and the only one who was kind to him was his half-brother Tsukasa who said 'Sora is just Sora' when he asked who he was and whether or not he was alive. His family had kept the girl name for him, as punishment since he was not the girl who had been wanted, leaving him wondering whether or not he even existed, since he was not Sora.

When Yoite was fourteen years old, his family was going to move to another house, however, they decided he should not go with them, and during one very dramatic incident, it ended with a family member slashing at his neck with a knife and then handing the knife over to Tsukasa to finish the job as Yoite was still alive. Tsukasa, unable to harm his half-brother dropped the knife and his hesitation allowed Yoite to run, running away from the house while holding his bleeding neck, collapsing in a street, half dead. He was found by a man named Hattori, brought to a hospital and taken into emergency surgery, which saved his life. However, due to the traumatic events and the life-long abuse, he now had a wish to be erased-- To never have been born at all since he was never wanted in the first place and so that his mother may live.

Hattori told him there was a way to grant that wish, and so Yoite began training to become a ninja in the world of Nabari-- A world hidden from everyone in 'Front' (or the normal world), leaning the forbidden technique, Kira, a technique which shortens the user's life and takes away the five senses, breaking the body down slowly, but gives an awesome power in return. He was put under the care of Yukimi Kazuhiko, another ninja working for Hattori, and 11 years his senior. Yukimi gave him the name Yoite since he refused to reveal his real name, and true to his name, meaning 'wind of the night', like a wind, a ghost, Yoite killed, perfectly completing every mission.

However, not too long after this, the Shinrabansho, a power that is like a God, capable of granting any wish, awakened and Yoite's goals began to stray toward that, wanting to use its power to cease existing since it was a wish his Kira could not grant.

A chance meeting with the host during one mission led to him to break off from his guardian for a while and kidnapping and threatening the host for the Shinrabansho, Miharu, who had no choice but to agree as Yoite said he would kill his friends if he didn't comply with his wishes. Once Miharu complies, the two begin planning as Miharu cannot control the Shinrabansho yet and they need every village's forbidden jutsu to accomplish their goal.

They decide to go to their respective sides for the time being and stay in contact for further planning.

Yoite returns to his guardian's place, and there, discusses whether or not he is dead or alive, demonstrating a pretty close relationship with him. Soon after they're sent out on a protective mission and Yoite realizes Miharu and his team are present, with the mission to kill the target Yoite and Yukimi have been sent to protect. After being dismissed by the people they'd been sent to protect however, Yoite and Yukimi head off to get some food, but seeing Miharu they pursue and capture him, returning to the person they were supposed to protect in time to save him from assassination by Thobari- Miharu's teacher. The target flees with his guards and Yukimi worries that the rest of the usual group surrounding Miharu are waiting in ambush, and asks Yoite to follow. He says that he won't, showing some of that bratty tendency to disregard direct orders.

A fight where it's Yoite & Yukimi vs. Thobari & Miharu ensues.

Miharu and Yoite end up facing each other in battle, while Yukimi and Thobari fight each other. Yoite and Miharu take the time to talk about their plans while the adults are distracted. When Thobari and Yukimi both begin focusing on them, they have to focus to make their fight seem real and Yoite ends up punching Miharu hard enough to send him flying. Thobari and Miharu flee to follow their target and Yoite and Yukimi pursue them.

They arrive in the garage the target has fled to. Oda Yae, the person who had given the assassination mission to Thobari and his group, is waiting there along with another ninja, Katou, and when Katou makes a move to attack the target, Yoite stops him using Kira. However, Oda Yae, who possesses the forbidden technique, Izuna Shingan, which allows the user to read other people's hearts, comes into range and reads Yoite's heart. The idea of her knowing all his secrets and the way she tries to manipulate him sends him into a panicked state, and he starts using Kira to attack indiscriminately. He's finally brought out of it by Miharu jumping in to take an attack and immediately backs away and collapses, shaking and fearful, telling Yukimi to not touch him when he tries.

Once he recovers, after the person they'd been assigned to protect has been eliminated by Kouichi- one of Miharu's friends and part of his group- he gets up to leave and takes blame for messing up the mission. He withdraws along with Yukimi.

Yukimi and Yoite return to their superior, and also present is Yukimi's sister, Kazuho, Raikou (a samurai) and Gau (Raikou's assistant). Raikou and Gau both show interest in Yoite, which makes him uncomfortable. Raikou says he likes Yoite's cold stare, while Gau is angry that Yoite doesn't respond.

Gau turns his irritation to Yukimi and lectures him on failing the mission they'd been given. Gau going on seems to irritate Yoite. After Hattori's arrival, everyone except Yoite focus on their reports. As Yukimi gets up to leave, Gau starts going on again. This time Yoite becomes pretty irritated, but unfortunately, his health has him near collapsing and he starts to retreat from the room- Hattori asks how long he has left, and Yoite informs Yukimi, who says that Yoite estimates he has perhaps two months left to live.

Returning to Yukimi's apartment, Kazuho shows up with food, however, Yoite leaves with a cold goodbye, to which Yukimi responds that 'isn't it "I'll be back soon"?'

Yoite leaves to find Miharu, but collapses on the way, and is found by a woman named Hanabusa Seki. As he refuses to let her call an ambulance for him, she brings him back to her place, and it turns out, she's Thobari's girlfriend and Miharu is at Thobari's house at the moment. Thobari and Yoite almost fight, but Hanabusa and Miharu get in between and Yoite is invited in.

As Miharu and Yoite sit outside on the porch, they discuss their plans.

As the evening progresses, Hanabusa says to Yoite he should stay at their place for the night, even as Thobari protests. However, Hanabusa treating him with such kindness scares him and he distances himself, and leaves, saying he'll think of what to do about the forbidden techniques on his side, and says that Miharu should be concerned with the ones on his side, and that he'll return once he's done on his end. He reminds Miharu that his friends are his hostages.

Despairing at being shown so much kindness, he finally leaves, going to the abandoned place he'd taken Miharu to before when he kidnapped him, collapsing there, which is where I'll be taking him from.

Personality:
Yoite is a quiet, reserved young man who doesn't open up to others easily, if he does so at all. He's the type to reject others, and and keep his cards close to his chest. He won't willingly talk about himself or his past, and prying would only agitate him, and depending on level, either prompt an attack or make him withdraw from the situation entirely if that's possible. When he does speak, what type of response is gotten does depend on who he's talking to, what he's going to talk about. To strangers, he will answer some questions, usually with single words or short sentences, but not actively engage without reason, and to those closer to him, the amount of speaking he does depends on how he's feeling or his objective at the time. However, with a person he's close to, he's more likely to respond and interact, even to the point of sharing random or even deep thoughts, depending, of course, on the level of trust he has with the person in question.

He is however, a person who tries to bond with as few people as possible, not wanting to leave a big impact on people, fearful of being memorable and trying to keep his distance as much as possible. He's the sort of person who prefers a relationship of using and being used to some end. Using for the sake of his wish, being used to some end, holding someone hostage and only being helped for that reason. Simple terms that don't require an emotional connection. Due to a traumatic past that has left him with a wish of being completely erased, people approaching him in a friendly or kind manner is often frightening to him, and the thought that someone might understand him, even like him, is even more so as he believes that he doesn't deserve being treated with anything even resembling human decency. He believes himself incapable of kindness, and thinks that he has nothing to offer others, nothing to offer in return for the kindness they may show him, and thus finds both confusing and to a degree, maybe even painful, when it's given to him. Not to say that he can't learn to accept it- Eventually- though at a later canon point that I'm taking him from- he starts vaguely recognizing that maybe he doesn't have to repay every kindness, and that people are with him because they like him and that's okay. It would just take much longer time than he had in canon to completely understand it, and completely accept it. In fact, he's so unfamiliar with regular human interaction that things that are common sense to a normal person, things that a normal person may have been raised believing, are totally new things to him that he needs to have explained to him and that he needs to have time to process. Such as people liking him and that kindness doesn't always need to be repaid and that relationships aren't always painful and scary.

At the canon point I'm taking him from however, he is a person who hates himself and has troubled thoughts. He believes himself to be neither dead or alive, and says he has no fear of death for this reason. It's also a time of curiosity- he's shown wondering how other people function, about what's normal for people and what's abnormal. He wonders why there are still humans who care and why they care for each other. Why they care for the world, when it's so endlessly scarred. He believes he is someone who can only harm others and that is why he's not properly alive. Some child-like traits also shine through in him- he's shown mimicking the actions of his guardian, Yukimi, he can be pretty bratty, seen when he calls Yukimi's sincere attempt at cheering him up 'corny', and becoming upset when he's called cute thought trying to kill the guy who called him that was maybe going a bit far, and he's also pretty food motivated in that giving him food or drink will help him settle down a little. To someone he trusts, he is someone who will greet them properly, say sorry when he needs to and clumsily care for them. His wish also features very prominently in the early chapters, that he wishes to never have been born at all. That he wishes for total erasure from the pages of history and will do just about anything to get to this particular goal no matter how he ends up being viewed for it, since as soon as it's granted, it won't matter since no one will remember.

He's shown not minding going out of his way for this wish- He breaks off from the one who has been put in charge of him and goes out to make a deal with Miharu- the holder of the Shinrabansho (lit. all things in nature, basically; God)- who can actually grant his wish. Many of his actions in going about this seem ruthless, threatening to kill Miharu's friends, basically holding him hostage, throwing Miharu's own wishes under the bus to further his own desire to completely cease existing. Even in this his child-like and kind nature shows through though, in the end, not able to remain completely business-minded, quite earnestly and energetically promising Miharu that he will make him the Ruler of Nabari in return, though one would think as a person who has hostages, there's no need for him to involve himself to that point.

As a ninja though, and as one who is willing to selfishly work to his own end regardless of who ends up hurt, there is little he won't do. He's shown to be rather ruthless, not afraid to kill opponents if that is what's required of him. He has an efficient and analytical mind, extremely observant and very quick on the uptake- the first time his team encounters Miharu and his friends for example, Yoite is the first to point out that the Shinrabansho is present- and his fighting capabilities are shown, able to hold off several ninjas and a samurai on his own. In plotting, evading others, and working toward a goal, he is able to work quite effectively. If he has a cause, he has no problems thinking seriously on how to get to his goal, and try to plan for future events. However, this selfish and ruthless side of him also creates a good bit of fear in others. Though as a jest, even his guardian says that 'he would probably kill me' should he get in his way and at the early canon point he's from, yes, he probably would attack and possibly kill those in his way should it become necessary for him to do so. Except for said guardian- Yukimi mentions at a later canon point that Yoite has not directed his forbidden jutsu at him even once.

He's even shown being protective of him, visibly irritated regardless of not saying anything, when someone badmouths Yukimi.

The leader of Kairoushuu- that is, basically a ninja organization filled with elites Yoite is a part of-, Hattori, says Yoite is a kind, smart, and diligent child who unknowingly makes connections to others.

And this is very much true. Despite what he may think, he over-shares parts of himself sometimes, such as with Miharu who is more of less his hostage, given that Yoite says he will kill his friends if he doesn't grant his wish, he still does things that someone more closed off wouldn't, like share his anxieties and express stress with him. He will reject outright friendliness and camaraderie, and yet he can unknowingly show those qualities himself, however subtle. There's a line between business and personal details that he can't particularly see clearly, pulling people to him. While he is closed off from other people, he still somehow manages to bond with them without really knowing that he is. Of course, this too makes sense in that his isolated youth left him growing up without knowing boundaries in social interactions, so he really wouldn't know where to draw the line other than not really sharing personal details.

And though mentioned earlier, he's definitely also shown in the light of still being child-like. With the food motivation, not liking it when people call him cute, but it- along with his fears and anxieties- is also shown in things like fixating on his hat, shown in one chapter, to ask for it several times after it fell off, and he's rarely shown without it, making it seem almost like a comfort item to him and something he can hide behind.

It's also worth mentioning that he's afraid of the idea of someone coming to understand him, to the point of having panic attacks and blindly attacking those around him if pushed too far. He's definitely someone who needs to be delicately handled. People coming too close too quickly will definitely get a negative reaction. He doesn't mind yelling at people not to touch him if necessary.

As for a point that's not been brought up too much yet- He's extremely smart, able to process all the information needed to become a ninja in a year, along with learning the forbidden technique of his village in this time. His observational skills are also top-notch, even able to find a hidden ninja village on his own, and to make up for his failing hearing, even taught himself how to read lips. When it comes to his ability to learn he's basically like a sponge- He only needs to hear or see or use things a couple of times to start grasping the concepts.

All in all, Yoite is a bright and talented teenager with a quiet, reserved attitude as a result of his tragic past, and who's not sure if he'd dead or alive. He's someone who thinks he can only harm others, even though he's shown with the capacity to care for others, and at the canon point he's being taken from, still has a lot to learn about himself.

Abilities:
Kira - A forbidden technique in which the user can shoot their life force into other people and things and take control from the inside. It can be used for anything from breaking arms and legs, cracking skulls, splitting people in two or even rupturing a person's head like a balloon. In addition to this, pieces of the user's life force can be left inside of others, so if the Kira user dies, the people with the fragments of life force in them also die. Depending on where it's left, it can even do things like cause blindness. Kira is also capable of being used to wake someone from a coma (seen in the manga), and assuming it's a target without a life force to take over, the target in question will usually explode. However, using this forbidden technique also comes with a ton of negative effects, such as the fragments not returning, so the user is basically shaving off their own lifespan, it causes deterioration of the user's health, and slowly causes a loss of all five senses, and after taking it's course, finally kills the user. Along with this, life force is always slowly leaking out as though from a broken container, leaving the user facing an early death even if it's not used.

Ninja abilities - Poorly defined in canon, but includes techniques allowing the users to use the elements to their advantage. Short-range 'teleportation' to allow for a speedy retreat. Also the untie technique that Yoite especially uses to remove the fragments of life force assuming he's left them in someone. Some observational skills also fall under this umbrella, as he likely used these to find the hidden Fuuma village.

Fighting skills - Technically part of being a ninja, but he's also a proficient fighter without using Kira or other ninja abilities. He's extremely fast, to the point of being able to rely on speed to get the upper hand, and strong despite not looking like he is. He can also do things like leap from very high places without harming himself. As for his strength, he's shown being able to kick someone through a wooden wall, and at one point punches Miharu so hard he sends him flying, so he's certainly a force to be reckoned with even without using his other abilities.

Alignment: Piphron. Trust is difficult for him, and he's very slow to trust others, but distrust is something he basically breathes.

Other:
His amulet will look like this, except crystal, obvs.

⌈ SAMPLE SECTION ⌉

First Person Sample:
Here!
Third Person Sample:
Yoite didn't particularly want to involve himself with this world beyond being in it. Unfortunately it was a necessity- he had to, if he didn't want to starve to death. So he has two options, either work or stealing. Neither option was very lucrative, if you asked him, but... He decided that working and earning money was the best idea, since the last thing he wanted was to draw attention to himself, which he would, should he turn to stealing. He'd decided on a delivery job. It was simple enough to do, and he was more or less used to running around. He didn't have to stay in close contact with anyone for longer than necessary either. Not with his employer, nor the clients that received the packages.

Carrying a package that needed to be delivered under his arm, he stopped, to make sure he was going the right way. The winding streets of Verens weren't any worse than anywhere else, but he still needed to become used to them. He'd take the high road across rooftops if he could, but unfortunately, he needed to stay on street level so he could read the signs that would point him in the right direction. The amount of people wandering around however, was less than pleasant. He wished he could make deliveries in the cover of night. He tried his best to step as far out of the way as possible, near pressing himself to the side of a house as he studied sign on it, wondering if he was going the right way. Was that a B or a D up there.

The sign was a bit worn out and with his eyesight not being the best, he couldn't quite make it out...

Looking around, there were a lot of people to ask, but... Honestly, staying out in the open, in this bright place and crowded place, was making him feel awkward and uncomfortable, and while this didn't show on him, the environment reacted, the light around him seeming more dim, and a few plants nearby had begun to whither slightly.

How was he supposed to reach out to someone?...

Maybe it was a better idea for him to just take a chance. If he was late with the delivery, he'd just have to apologize. With that plan in mind, he headed down the street, making sure that he didn't accidentally bump into someone.
